“Family Constellation is not a technique or method. It’s a way. A transition to a new level of consciousness.”

Bert Hellinger

What Is Family Constellation?

Family constellation, developed by the German philosopher and psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, is a therapeutic approach that explores hidden dynamics within families to resolve deep-seated emotional issues. It is based on the idea that unresolved traumas and patterns can be unconsciously passed down through generations, affecting present relationships and well-being. In a session, participants represent family members, revealing unconscious loyalties and entanglements. By recognizing and repositioning these roles, healing and balance can be restored.

How Does Family Constellation Work?

Family Constellation can take place in either a group or individual format.

Both approaches are suitable for uncovering unconscious patterns, releasing emotional blockages, improving relationships, and restoring emotional balance.

This method is increasingly recognized in the fields of personal growth and emotional healing.

Group Family Constellation

In group sessions, participants represent members of someone else’s family, making hidden dynamics visible.

This process reveals unconscious loyalties and entanglements. By recognizing and reorganizing these dynamics, healing and balance can begin.

Individual Family Constellation

In one-on-one sessions, we use objects or markers placed on the floor or table to symbolically represent family members.

Steps of a Family Constellation

Initial Contact and Consultation

A brief conversation is held where the client expresses the issue or question, they are seeking clarity on.

How to Prepare Physically and Emotionally for Family Constellation

While having some background knowledge of your family history can be helpful, in-depth genealogical research is not required. Before a family constellation session, it is important to slow down and tune into yourself. It is advisable to avoid stressful situations the day before and the day of the session.

Come with an open heart, family constellation is not a rational conversation but an intuitive, energetic process. The more open and non-judgmental you can be, the deeper you can go, and the greater the chance for transformation.

Choosing the Topic and Defining the Focus
Together, we determine the life situation, relationship, or emotional theme to be explored, such as a relationship issue, self-worth challenge, or family conflict.
Selecting the Representatives or Elements

Based on the client’s intuition, helpers or symbolic objects are placed in the space by the client, representing, for example, parents, siblings, important events, emotions, or object like Alcohol or even a miscarried child.

Setting Up the System
  • In group constellations: Participants stand in as “representatives” for specific family members or elements.
  • In individual constellations: Objects, figurines, or floor markers symbolically represent the family members or elements.

You observe your own constellation from the outside, while the representatives reveals the inside.

Tuning In and Observing Intuition
Representatives begin to express sensations, feelings, or movements, revealing hidden dynamics within the system. The method draws on the concept of the morphogenetic field, an invisible space where the experiences and patterns of a family, species, or community are stored, shaping the present generation.

The facilitator observes the “language” and movements of the field.

Recognition, Acknowledgment, and Healing Sentences
Blocks, exclusions, or unconscious loyalties within the family system are revealed. Healing sentences (e.g., “I see you,” “You are the mother, I am your child”) support the restoration of order.
Reordering – Restoring Balance
Representatives move into new positions in the space, reflecting a shift in the system. Clients often experience this change on a physical or emotional level.
Closing and Integration
At the end of the constellation, time is given for the client to integrate the experience. Representatives may also share reflections from their roles.

What to expect after Family Constellation session?

After a Family Constellation session, you can expect a range of experiences, some immediate, others more subtle and gradual. Here is what you might notice:

A sense of relief, lightness, or clarity is common, even after just one session.

Dreams, memories, or unexpected insights may arise as your system reorganizes.

Your dynamics with certain family members or others might shift, sometimes subtly, other times more noticeably. What to Keep in Mind:

Let it unfold naturally
Do not rush to interpret or analyse everything right away. Trust that insight and clarity will emerge in their own time.

Give yourself space
Avoid making major decisions immediately after a session. Allow yourself time to reflect and integrate what surfaced.

Be kind to yourself
This is deep, sensitive inner work. Approach it with patience and self-compassion; healing takes time.

How often is it recommended to do a Family Constellation?

Family Constellation can be repeated until you notice a meaningful shift in your life. However, it is important to allow time for the effects of the previous session to integrate – usually a break of a few weeks or even months is recommended between sessions.

A Gradual Path to Healing

Family Constellation is a powerful method whether in a group or one on one setting.
It is important to understand, however, that it does not offer instant solutions. Change begins gently and gradually, and it takes time before the effects become truly noticeable.
Even gaining a new perspective on your situation can be a profound first step. This shift in awareness often leads to deeper understanding, which in turn allows acceptance to emerge but it is all part of a process.
Many people report feeling a sense of lightness and relief even after just one session.

Underlying this process are what Bert Hellinger called the ‘Orders of Love’ fundamental principles that govern how love flows within families. Understanding these orders helps explain why difficulties arise and how balance can be restored.

Orders of Love

Bert Hellinger, who developed this approach, explained that problems arise in families when love between generations cannot flow freely. When the fundamental Orders are ignored, blockages form within the family system, often showing up as various difficulties such as health problems, addictions, or troubled relationships. These imbalances are frequently rooted in unconscious influences and can be triggered by different stressors like trauma, war, or injustice.

  1. Law of Belonging: Everyone has a place. Everyone who belongs to the family system has an equal right to belong. This includes parents, children, siblings (living or deceased), previous partners, miscarried or aborted children, and sometimes even victims or perpetrators connected to the family.
  2. Law of Order:Everyone has their rightful position. There is a natural order in families, based on time and precedence. Parents come before children, the first partner comes before later ones, older siblings come before younger.
  3. Law of Balance: In healthy adult relationships, love thrives when there is a balance between giving and receiving. Between siblings, partners, or colleagues, balance is key.
